TikTok For Authors: Let's Boost Your Online Presence

Jade Mills

We are living in such a fast-paced world of social media, and TikTok has emerged as an incredibly powerful platform for creative expression and content discovery. For authors seeking various ways to promote their books and connect with a broader audience, I’ve found that TikTok can offer quite the opportunity, as long as you are willing to put the work in. So in today’s blog I’m going to add ten tips and tricks that I think are worth knowing if you want to promote and encourage book sales!

Create Engaging Book-Related Content:

Share snippets of your book, behind-the-scenes moments, or booktok worthy trailers. Enticing the type of readers you want is your main goal here. By creating short, captivating videos you can give potential readers a taste of your work! Luring them in is just the beginning. Remember you are selling yourself just as much as your novel.

TikTok Challenges:

Participate in or create book-related challenges to engage the TikTok community. Encourage people to share their favourite book excerpts, creative interpretations, or reactions to your work. Even if it isn't in relation to your novel, it will help when building a like-minded community. Especially in the specific genre or niche that you write in. This interactive approach can generate quite the buzz around you and your writing.

Collaborate with TikTok Influencers:

Find influencers or book reviewers on TikTok who align with your genre or target audience. There are an abundance of them, so it shouldn't be too difficult! Collaborate with them to create content featuring your book. Influencers can provide valuable exposure and authentic reviews, influencing their hoard of potential readers. Maybe start by offering them an ARC copy of your novel, everyone loves a freebie!

Hashtags Effectively:

Research and use popular book-related hashtags to increase the chances of your content being discoverable, and maybe even going viral. Tailor your hashtags to reflect your book's genre, themes, or specific TikTok challenges. This is a sure way to maximise your visibility within the booktok community. Also, try not to stick to the same hashtags with every post, get creative, think outside the box, double down on your specific niche.

Engage with Your Audience:

Now this one just seems like a no-brainer. But it is highly important that you have an active role. So, respond to comments, answer questions, and engage with your TikTok audience. Building a genuine connection with potential readers ensures you are creating a sense of community and increases the likelihood of people exploring your account further and looking into your book.

Offer Exclusive Content:

This is the one I love! There is nothing to showcase yourself more, than providing exclusive content. By doing so, you are giving your followers and potential readers an incentive to check out your book. A bit like a sales funnel. Your exclusive content could be anything, ranging from additional chapters to character insights, or any content that adds value and intrigues your audience.

Host Live Q&A Sessions:

TikTok's live feature can be daunting to some, but it is also an element you can capitalise on. There are many discussions you can have whilst being live that will promote your book. Some popular ways is to host Q&A sessions about your book, writing process, or upcoming projects. I have seen some authors use their live platform to simply have some company while they write, they bounce off ideas with their readers or ask for help with a character's name etc. The possibilities are endless! But one thing is for sure, this form of interaction allows you to connect with readers in real-time and builds a personal connection.

Showcase Book Reviews and Testimonials:

Another fave of mine. TikTok is a perfect place to showcase positive book reviews or reader testimonials. By compiling them into captivating videos, you are sure to attract more readers. I find that reviews with a comparison always work well (Eg, If you liked Sarah J Maas' series, you'll love this). Hearing real experiences from others can encourage potential readers to explore your work.

Share the Writing Journey:

Don't be shy about sharing your writing journey, from concept to completion. You would be surprised how many readers want to hear about the challenges, successes, and personal anecdotes related to your book. This transparent approach can resonate with your audience and make you and your book more relatable. Again, building that personal connection!

Include a Call-to-Action:

It is incredibly important that you always include a clear call-to-action in your TikTok videos. This can range from directing viewers to your book's website, Amazon page, or other platforms where they can make a purchase or learn more about your book. If you have a post and you think what is the purpose of this? You might not want to post it, or at least rethink the aim of what your trying to sell.

TikTok can be an amazing way to boost your online presence and ultimately your book sales. But, like anything, it requires consistency and patience. Make sure you do your research, see what is trending, follow other authors who have been successful on the platform, and don't forget those pesky hashtags! Once you see those followers rising, and people engaging, there will be nothing stopping you!
